Goals
Economy
- Our institutions should be powerful drivers of economic and social mobility in Nebraska, currently producing more than 11,000 graduates annually. However, our economy needs more graduates to fill the jobs in our community. As a past employer, we have had hundreds of job openings for healthcare professionals. It is difficult to recruit new businesses into Nebraska without a labor supply. In the years ahead, Nebraska will have 34,000 annual openings in high-skill, high demand, high-wage jobs like engineering and software development. How are we going to fill the void? However, many leave Nebraska for better options.
- One of my goals is to expand STEM programs in partnership with school districts and our universities. Agriculture and Business programs will also be partnered with communities and industry. Working together, will make Nebraska grow and prosper.
- Another goal is to create partnerships with industry to keep our graduates here.
Education
- Creating an educated Nebraska should be a fundamental mission of NE institutions. Improving our community and enhancing job growth begins with an effective educational system so our children and young adults have a chance to grow our community and bring high paying jobs to Nebraska. Our ability to grow and support a skilled, K-12 educational workforce in Nebraska directly impacts the future competitiveness and well-being of our state. The University of Nebraska only trains 40% of new Lincoln Public Schools teachers. As we instruct the next generation of educators to support the next generation of Nebraskans, we must identify new ways to prepare our children for their careers.
- One goal is to bring affordable education to all Nebraskans. Reducing the large debt burden for students is accomplishable with business joint ventures or improved scholarship opportunities.
- Another goal is to collaborate with high schools and bring programs to school leaders and guidance counselors.
Innovation (improved healthcare and business solutions)
- Innovation on our campuses need strengthening so we can build business and economic opportunities for our graduates. Our farmers and ranchers need technology advancements and innovation to keep on the cutting edge to enhance production. UNL has an average rating for universities in one of the latest college rating guidebooks. We are not a nationally recognized research university either. If we want innovation and growth, we need to provide opportunities for our students to create that change. Let’s attract top faculty, bring high-tech businesses and develop a reason for our students to stay or come to Nebraska. We have “the good life” where values and families matter.
- My goal is to attract and keep top leaders like a President and Athletic Director filled for our universities. Great leadership leads to successful programs, academics, student outcomes and winning results.
- Another goal is to build collaborative training prgrams with many of our businesses to keep Nebraska growing.
